On 18th April, 1915, the 4th King’s Royal Rifle Corps battalion of 80 Brigade, 27th Division were relieved from trenches near Nonne Boschen Wood in the Ypres salient and moved back to dugouts at Bellewarde, near Hooge. They were still here on 20th April, the day on which Albert Wood was killed, when the enemy began a heavy artillery bombardment of the area as a preliminary to the Second Battle of Ypres. A shell landed on one of the dugouts, killing four men. |
